Future of Design

Exterior:

Source

I believe we will start seeing more and more homes that will be built small, but tall. The more we develop on the surface, the more conscious of space saving buildings we'll see. Also, I expect we'll see many more solar panels and alternative energy technology being implemented into our buildings.

I think we'll see many more homes that have sleek and very minimalistic interiors. Also the technology inside of our homes will become much more important. Touch screens and holographic/VR type implementations in the home will make daily tasks easier.

Fashion:

In the future of fashion, we'll see lots of different fabrics and technology coupled together. We'll start seeing touchscreens embedded into jackets and accessories linked to your phone. Fashion designers will keep pushing the boundaries of different materials used in new ways.

In the future of Graphic Design we'll start seeing a huge push in thoughtful design. Technology will only grow and within that technology we see a push for new innovative products to be accessible to the general public. We need the people to grow with the technology and be able to utilize the products in a natural and intuitive way that is familiar to the people.

In the future the world is looking for sustainable energy and food. I believe hydroponic farming will start to replace standard farming practices. It's efficiency and ability to cut costs of farming will outweigh the traditional farming techniques. We'll also start to see products that are environmentally considerate.

Gnomon International Design

In the heart of Hollywood, Gnomon has renovated its space to reflect International Design. It has a strong and powerful exterior with a raised building to differentiate administrative offices, student services and administrative parking which is located below the building. The right larger building houses the educational facilities. The school houses 2 lab areas; a 24 hour lab and a lab which is open during school hours. The school, maintaining their standard of excellence also includes a small cafe and cafeteria for students and administration, a large auditorium for events as well as classrooms which are equipped with professional industry workstations with access to render farms. The educational building also includes a storage facility for students a library and student store. The Gnomon campus also prides itself on being handicap accessible and has mental and physical health services for students.

This particular floor houses the 24 hour lab. It is equipped with a small kitchen area, bathrooms, a break room, a small sleeping area, the main lab floor and small conference rooms. The kitchen is stocked with utensils, a small eating area, a fridge, coffee machines, and toaster oven and microwave. The break room includes a few couches with a wide screen TV, a video library, game consoles, arcade games, and a sitting area with tables. Next to the break room is the sleeping area. This sleeping area has bunk beds where students can take small naps (it is stressed that students are required to maintain healthy hygiene and that this does not serve as your apartment living area). Fresh sheets are kept in a cabinet and a dirty laundry bin is next to the cabinet. Students are expected to remove their used sheets and put them in the laundry bin. the wide lab area has work stations and small pull out tables on each station for extra surface area. The conference rooms in the center of the lab allow students to either work on traditional medias or work in groups.

The style of the lab area features a bright and open feel. Large windows allow ample natural lighting which can also be shaded if necessary. Each station also comes equipped with anti-glare monitors.

Arts & Crafts Era

Updated:

Made Page 2 more in line with the rest of the catalog. Removed the patterning border which made this page a much more "clean" and simple design.

In my rendition of an Arts & Crafts catalog, I chose to be employed under Morris & Co. I wanted to explore the diversity in which one pattern can be applied to different Items. In the cover I wanted simplicity and beauty, much like Morrison was known for. The 2 page spread explores what the catalog would look like if they were promoting a new pattern.

*Please note that the pattern "Eliza" was created by me in the style of the "Arts & Crafts" era.

Week 2 - Shoe Design

Updated:

Revised design based off of comments and critiques. Added leather texture onto shoe.

Shoe concept:
A mid-heel shoe that can be worn to many different occasions. The metal tip and heel give this a bit of an edgier look while the lace lends it'self to a touch of femininity. The inside of the shoe is a cloth patterned with fun colors. The outside of the shoe is more conservative with a bit of edge, while the inside of the shoe explodes with color.

Week 1 - What is Good Design to Me?

Product Design

&Cabinet, Kitty Slim Handy Mirror, 2015 (Specific manufacture date unknown), Korea

Naturally European, Milk Luxury Hand Cream, 2015 (Specific manufacture date unknown), UK
The products above are examples of good design. The "Kitty Slim Handy Mirror" shows how design and function play hand in hand. The cute and attractive graphic of a kitty cat is not the only aesthetically appealing part of this design, but the cat shape also makes this endearing to the audience. Practicality is a key part here; it's slim and small which fits perfectly into a wallet for convenience. The "Milk Luxury Hand Cream" exudes elegance and with the small size it fits easily into a purse.

Architecture

Richard Mique, Hameau de la Reine (Mill), 1783, Versailles, France

Interpretation of the Gardens by Dutch artist Martin Heemskerck, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, around 600 BC, Babylon
In architecture we find that "cookie cutter" homes tend to be practical to build, but not necessarily attractive once the whole block is lined up with the exact same house. The "Hameau de la Reine" is quaint and beautiful with the lush greenery surrounding the small Mill. The color and shape is appealing with its staircase leading up to a decorated door. I find that when architecture is coupled with nature, it can be breath-taking and very attractive in design. For instance, the "Hanging Gardens of Babylon," though seemingly a myth, speaks of lush gardens decorating a majesty of a city. This particular interpretation by Martin Heemskerck has appealing geometric shapes that house the organic greenery of the gardens.

Yatzer, Dream Loft, Dec. 15, 2011,

Bagnolet, France

Interior of bedroom, Unknown origin, date, location or designer
I won't lie, but I have a bias for lofts. They have wide open spaces and sometimes unusual interiors which make it a challenge to furnish and decorate, but that's where the beauty lies. In the "Dream Loft," there's a playfulness that makes for wonderful design. The shelves and cabinets all play a part in making this area seem cozy and functional. The industrial metal staircase leads your eye up so the space doesn't seem too claustrophobic. Again, when I am looking for good design I tend to lean toward clever uses of space. The small bedroom would pose a problem in most cases, however, their use of a space gives you everything you need in a bedroom with appealing colors to make it feel cozy.

Clothing

Kim Min Jeong, Hanbok Lynn, Date unknown, Korea
Jeffery Kurland, Beautiful Creatures Ridley dress design, 2013, US
Good design adapts to the changes and cultures of the present. The designer, Kim Min Jeong, has modernized this cultural wedding dress, but maintained the beautiful lines and cuts of a traditional hanbok. We also see good designs repeated in history, for instance, lace. Lace speaks of elegance with delicate work in each piece. This lace dress by Jeffery Kurland is stunning with it's flattering cut. The lace dress frames the face and the actress's figure to create an appealing piece.

Josh Mirman,A Very Wordy Hero, 2010, US

inbrandible, Fish Lovers, Date Unknown, Indonesia
Lastly, we have graphic design. The first piece by Josh Mirman called "A Very Wordy Hero" is wonderful design. He uses negative space to imply shape and uses font of varying colors to create the figure, Mario. He then cleverly uses font to engage the viewer to try and see what the words are saying. In "Fish Lovers," we find that simplicity and clarity is the key. With hearts making up the body of the fish, the message is clear "we love fish!" A beautifully designed logo and brand that can be easily remembered.
